Fall 2020 Class List

The Six Dharma Gates To the Sublime
Douglas Powers
Thurs 3:45-5:00 PM
[Available online]

This classic, by Tiantai Master Zhiyi, explains the six practices crucial to success in traditional Indian Buddhist breath (anapana) and calming-and-insight (samatha-vipasyana) meditation.

Correctly implemented, these six "gates" lead the practitioner to realize the third of the Four Noble Truths (cessation), of which the "sublimity" referenced in the title is one of the four canonically-described practice aspects.

Shurangama Mantra Review
Bhikshuni Heng Chih
Tue 3:30-5:00PM
On Winter break. Resuming in February 2, 2021.
[Available online for previous retreat attendees]
We will continue with the Fifth Assembly of the Shurangama Mantra, looking at the Tang dynasty text by Masters Paramiti and Bu-kong (Amoghasiddhi), studying the Qing dynasty text by Master Xu-fa, and then exploring in detail Venerable Master Hua’s verse and prose commentaries on each set of syllables. Question and comments from the on-line and in-class participants are welcome as we learn the meaning and functions of the mantra syllables, define technical terms, consider the content of relevant Buddhist lists, and share pertinent experiences in practice. Last class on Nov. 24, 2020. Classes will resume Feb. 2, 2021.
