Shurangama Sutra Summer Retreat - 50th Anniversary
In 1968, Venerable Master Hsuan Hua hosted the first Shurangama Sutra Study and Meditation summer program in the West. This event became a catalyst for the beginning of a Western Sangha and Dharma community that has grown over the years to become Dharma Realm Buddhist Association. Now, 50 years later, we will investigate the Shurangama Sutra again with senior disciples of Master Hua, many of whom were at the first Shurangama Sutra retreat. The Shurangama Sutra has guided Chan (Zen) practitioners throughout the millennia. In this text, the Buddha explains the essentials of meditation practice explaining how we create our reality through our projections and how to breakthrough our confusion to awakening. This retreat is a unique opportunity to learn from teachers that have studied, translated, and practiced this text for 50 years in an immersive monastic environment. Spaces are limited. Please sign up early. When: June 22, 3:00pm to July 1, 12:00pm Program: We will follow a daily schedule of recitation, seated meditation, sutra study and community work. To accommodate as many participants as possible, we will offer three options for attending the retreat:

Arrival day: Please arrive at between 3:00-5:00 pm to check-in, there will be dinner, evening ceremony, followed by orientation to go over jobs, and brief evening lecture. Last day: Morning Ceremony, breakfast, lecture, clean-up, end at 12pm. Bag lunch provided. |
Noble Silence:
To maintain a inner and outer environment of concentration, we will observe Noble Silence throughout the retreat. However, participants may speak during discussion periods and lectures, and as-needed during community work.
No Digital Devices:
Please 'unplug' and refrain from using digital technology like cell phones, laptops, tablets and music players during the retreat. This week is a rare opportunity to look deeply into our minds free of the distractions from our devices (as well as giving others the space to do so as well).
Service as Practice:
Service plays a central role in the overall retreat experience by bringing the Dharma into daily life, supporting others, and creating a sense of community. During the retreat, everyone will be given a simple work duty such as kitchen-prep, cleaning, and dish washing. We hope to foster an environment where work, study, and practice are all integrated into one holistic experience.
