Compassion that makes a difference
2020 Summer Retreat at the Sudhana Center

Led by Bhikshuni Heng Chih and Doug Powers

How do we cultivate a compassion that can change the direction of humanity?

During this retreat, we’ll focus on one of the major texts in Buddhism (the Ten Grounds of the
Avatamsaka Sutra), which gives a detailed account of the practices and insights required to take the heart of loving-kindness into engaged compassionate action.

We will reflect on how this spiritual progression not only transforms ourselves, but those around us, radiating out through society/social matrix/world culture.

Through noble silence, meditation, ceremonies, service, and close reading, we will experiment with possibilities for how to engage our “worlds” in a new way.

Spaces are limited. Please sign up early.

When:
Saturday May 30, 1:30pm – Saturday June 6, 12pm

Program:
We will follow a daily schedule of recitation, seated meditation, sutra study and community work.

To accommodate as many participants as possible, we will offer two options for attending the retreat:
  1. Residential, includes room and board at Sudhana Center. Requires commitment to attend the full retreat schedule.
  2. Evening lecture, come each night between 7:30-9:00pm for lecture only. Requires registration, no drop-in.

Noble Silence:
To maintain an inner and outer environment of concentration, we will observe Noble Silence throughout the retreat. However, participants may speak during discussion periods and lectures, and as-needed during community work.

No Digital Devices:
Please 'unplug' and refrain from using digital technology like cell phones, laptops, tablets and music players during the retreat. This week is a rare opportunity to look deeply into our minds free of the distractions from our devices (while giving others the space to do so as well).

Service as Practice:
Service plays a central role in the overall retreat experience by bringing the Dharma into daily life, supporting others, and creating a sense of community. During the retreat, everyone will be given a simple work duty such as kitchen-prep, cleaning, and dish washing. We hope to foster an environment where work, study, and practice are all integrated into one holistic experience.

Location:
DRBU Sudhana Center
